Banking and Money

ATM Literacy

Picture

Hands-on learning is EVERYTHING!
I promise you will not regret it if you take the time to build a classroom bank machine from a cardboard box. Three teachers in my school have made use of it, and I continue to use it semester after semester.

Here are some TD Bank ATM screens that you can print for your classroom ATM.*

Our first week-long module was built around depositing a cheque and some cash. We took pictures in the classroom and wrote a book. Each student copied the words into her blank book while the master was projected on the board. This is the activity pack I created to accompany that book. Bonus worksheets: Word Shapes Puzzle; Word Search Puzzle

The real-world task for the following week's module was to withdraw $80 cash. Here is the teacher's version of our book; advanced students filled in a blank version while very new students got a version with only a few words missing. In this way everyone can finish together.

Here is the activity pack I created for that week.
Bonus worksheets: ATM Withdrawal Flyswatter Game Board; ATM Withdrawal Word Shapes

*The DEPOSIT screens are now out of date since TD has envelope-free deposits, but you can edit or omit that part of the unit.

The Best of the Reader series - Keeping Safe book includes a chapter Safety Tips at the ATM

For lab day or in-class computer use:
GFC Learn Free has an ATM simulator (American).
Here is a Canadian ATM simulator.
Here is a debit / Interac (TM) simulator.
Here is an ATM blog post I made for my students. Feel free to play games using our word list.

Fatima Goes to the Bank

Fatima Goes to the Bank is a literacy level story illustrated with black and white line drawings by the Halifax Immigrant Learning Centre as part of their Changing Lanes series. I can no longer find these books online, so I'm glad I downloaded them while they were available. I hope they don't mind my sharing here!

My class has a lot of fun with the role plays. We use a lot of realia and props, such as a debit terminal I made from a candy box.

Money

Picture
When teaching Canadian money, I use our school's set of fake bills and coins. A good reference sheet can be found in the PBLA Language Companion. I also use:
  • Print the Names of the Coins
  • Counting Money from theTeachersCorner.net
  • Money True False Quiz
  • Money BINGO game

When I teach CLB 1L-2L students about money and shopping, I include information on which grocery store items are subject to tax and which are not. So not all items they choose from the flyer will require calculation of tax. I teach them how to multiply a price by .13 to get the tax using the calculator tool on their phone or using one of the dollar store calculators in our school set.

Here is the money blog post I made for the literacy learners for lab day. We also used Money Master, a WONDERFUL interactive coin counting website, in class before lab day.
