Family, People, Relationships

It is my hope that when you teach your clients about Canadian families, you will include non-traditional families in order to give newcomers a real picture of our cultural norms and Canadian values. I am hoping to create a little booklet that includes vignettes of non-traditional families, but so far I only have two families who have volunteered to be portrayed. Help me get the word out! Meanwhile...

This is a FAMILY activity pack to supplement Hands On! A Collection of ESL Literacy Activities, which is linked on my LINKS page.
Here is a Word Shapes worksheet for terms describing immediate family.

Other Good Resources

  • New Readers Press' Talk of the Block series of short vowel and long vowel readers in four themes. There is a mom with two kids; they make a good starting point for certain language points and lexis.
  • Some of the books in the discontinued Changing Lanes series are not bad, though I find them to be a bit long for my purposes. But you may like A Day at Razia's House.
  • Whenever possible, I prefer to create a Language Experience Approach book with photos the learners and I take together.
  • REEP World has some excellent online resources for lower levels. Too bad it's not Canadian.
