GENERAL ESL LITERACY

BLANK TEMPLATE FOR LEA BOOK
If you would like to make your own Language Experience Approach book with your learners, feel free to use this LEA Book blank template. To use this template, you will need to install the font KG Primary Penmanship on all machines on which you plan to open the book. Please consider making a donation to Kimberly Geswein for her great font! (Donation button under DOWNLOAD.)

To add a cover page to this book, just go to Document Elements -> Cover. Here is an example of a finished LEA book my class and I wrote together.
For those who prefer to work in Google Slides, here is a template that works nicely if you want each page to be 8.5" by 11". For a smaller booklet, see below.

Here is a template in Google Slides that you may copy over to your Google Drive and edit to create a little booklet for your learners that uses just two sheets of paper with a centre fold for stapling. Read the speaker notes area for an explanation of which picture to place where.

Vowels: Learning the First Sounds chart to post in classroom to help with daily drilling (five minutes every class) at Phase 1 adequate or Phase 2 literacy levels and up. Click the image to download PDF or title of poster to access Google Drawing.
BOOKS I USE MOST
My first choice for material is a book we have written around a shared experience, such as a trip to the library. Otherwise, the following are my tried and true resources.
  • ESL Literacy Network's Readers
  • Talk of the Block short and long vowel series by New Readers' Press
  • Hands On! A Collection of ESL Literacy Activities by Halifax Immigrant Learning Centre
  • CLEO ESL materials - I use the pictures and grade the language.
FAVOURITE WEBSITES and RESOURCES
My favourite literacy links are on my LINKS page.

PENMANSHIP PAPER
I made this blank penmanship paper in MS Word using KG Primary Penmanship Lined font from Kimberly Geswein so that I would never be caught without some of this paper in my file cabinet. We use it after a peer survey to write sentences about our classmates.
